With the majority of Utilities personnel being field-based, it is possible to achieve significant cost savings through relatively small improvements in operational efficiency.

A mobile workforce requires mobile technology and it is in this area that Fusion software is most commonly used. Loaded on to ruggedised tablet PCs, Fusion enables Field Service Personnel to maintain records of assets, work repairs, inspections and installations by keying or writing (using a stylus pen) directly into electronic forms. These forms can be pre-populated with data and called up as Engineers progress through their work schedule. On returning to the office, completed forms are downloaded to the network while the next day's work is simultaneously uploaded.

British Gas use Fusion software to review the safety and operation of over 12,000 personnel while accompanying Engineers on routine inspections. The software is also used in analysing the activities of Engineers in order to place a cost on performing certain tasks; an exercise known as Activity Based Costing (ABC). Senior management use this insight to make decisions about the most effective deployment of resource and to identify potential engineering efficiencies, while maintaining high standards of customer care.
